It looks like Republicans in partnership with big banks have been methodically working together to screw the people they are supposedly there to serve and help.
This is not conjecture. A copy of an email was was sent to Democratic Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois from a ‘banker friend’. The original email was from Tanya Wheeless, president and CEO of the Arizona Bankers Association. In the email Ms. Wheeless makes it very clear that the GOP and big banks are standing together to defeat any and all financial regulation or relief to consumers.
This comes as no great surprise to people who have been watching the snake dance of the GOP with their partner corporations and large banks. It also should not come as a surprise to consumers who have been on the receiving end of the gross unfairness and the outright malice this dance has produced. It definitely cannot be a surprise to legislators or the wealthy who have been on the receiving end of benefits from the dance and they would surely like the music to just keep playing on forever.
However, it must surprise some to see this strategy laid out in writing. It must also put fear into some. We will now start to see the shock on the faces and hear the outrage in the voices of the legislators who have been players in this immoral and nasty game. They are hooked fish and will start flailing around wildly looking for deep water in which to hide. It is our job to make sure they do not find even the smallest hiding place.
From The Huffington Post:
In a little-noticed but potentially explosive remark last Friday, Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) accused Republican leadership of signing a political pact with the banking industry: in exchange for help defeating a measure that would make it easier for homeowners to restructure failing mortgages, GOP leadership in the Senate would help banks defeat any additional efforts at regulatory reform.
The allegation of a quid pro quo was based on an email that Durbin received last spring after his amendment to allow judges to modify mortgages for homeowners who enter bankruptcy was defeated on the Senate floor. During a discussion to promote publicly-financed elections on Friday, the Illinois Democrat relayed that, shortly after the defeat of his “cram-down” amendment, a “banker friend” forwarded him the note from Tanya Wheeless, president & CEO of Arizona Bankers Association.

This is what The Young Turks have to say about this whole thing.
