Oh wow, the wild mustangs and burros in one area of Nevada are stealing food from the cows. Lets trim the herd down to 3, yes only 3 horses. That will keep those pesky wild animals from munching the same vegetation as our sacred cows do!
While many environmentalists celebrate the recent federal ruling that the Yellowstone wolves are once again an endangered species the battle against mans intolerance for his fellow creatures on our planet seems to have no end. Exactly who is it that decides how we control nature? What arrogance must one possess to feel they are the judge of regulating the type or number of wild animals which are allowed? Do these people really think they can run our environment better than a billion years of evolution?
This story hits close to home for me, both literally and figuratively. Two of the ‘big’ herds of wild mustangs that will soon be thinned are less than 30 miles from where I live in Tonopah Nevada. I have only lived here for a couple of years but one thing that always makes my heart beat a little faster is the sight of wild mustangs. They represent many of the things our nation stands for: freedom, independence and perseverance.
Sadly, to many people in our nation and our government these majestic animals are hated with the same passion devoted to wolves, mountain lions and bears. They roamed this land before the United States of America was a glimmer in the eyes of George Washington’s grand pappy. Now, on land that is owned by you, me and every American they are forced to compete for survival with idiot cattle and the intolerance of man.
The state of Nevada has hundreds of thousands of cattle grazing in land that we, the people of this nation, own. In stark contrast, there are just a handful of wild mustangs and burros left. Why? Because they eat the exact same thing as the cattle. That is the menace they pose! That is the threat they are! That is why they must be run by helicopters until they die or until their hooves detach from their legs. That is why these beautiful horses can be sold to companies that make glue and dog food. Simply because they eat to much grass that the cattle need to eat in order to provide profit for a rancher.
I do live out here now and have eyes. I am not just a piece of meat that will buy whatever the various branches of government tell me. I know there is an area 51 because it is less than 100 miles from where I sit right now. I have been stopped from driving down a one lane dirt road by military police. In the few short years I have lived here I have seen fewer and fewer wild horses. They are slowly disappearing and few if any people seem to care about it!
The so called ‘explosion’ of the wild horse and burro population up here has made some herds as large as 85 animals! OMG its the end of the world! Again I wish to stress to all who read this that it is public land these animals live on. We own it and we should have a say as to what happens on it. Ranchers lease this land from us through the BLM and the DOA at ridiculously low prices to graze their cattle. Then they bitch and moan over how much the wild horses and burros eat! Give me a break!
So who steps in to silence the whining tantrum throwing ranchers? The BLM, on our tax dollars. The BLM has neither the guts or the fortitude to tell the ranchers they should run a few less cattle on the land to allow the mustangs to live. The truth is you, I and every other taxpayer pay the cost of helicopters, manpower and fuel to send these magnificent creatures to a dog food plant. End of story.
Remember a few things though. This is after all your land and mine. It is our tax dollars that are paying to wipe out the wild mustang. It is cattle ranchers that want to see them gone so they can make as much as possible from the land they leased from you and me. Wild mustangs are a part of our national heritage, our art and a symbol of freedom that stands along side the Bald Eagle.
What are a few less cows compared to a symbol of our nation? Would you be willing to eat beef just a tad less to preserve the wild mustang? If you are willing to do just one little thing, then take a moment and send a letter to your representatives and tell them you do not want your tax dollars spent in a pursuit to drive these gorgeous creatures into extinction.
Help the few wild horses left in our nation. This should be an issue that is above partisan politics and bickering.
Here is an easy link for you to use to contact your Senators and Congressperson. It doesn’t matter if they are Democratic or Republican. Let them know you are watching and will hold them accountable for what happens to wild mustangs.
